The Women's Voluntary Service maintained the homefront in England during WWII. Founded by Lady Stella Reading. Laid in this book is a memo from that lady and signed by her. It is dated 3rd December, 1948 and addressed to The Rt. Hon. Ernest Brown, CH, onetime member of Winston Churchill's cabinet. It is a note about the book's release and details how difficult the narrative was due to the complex tasks and varied operations of the W.V.S. Noted in pencil on the left margin of the Foreward (written by the Dowager Marchioness of Reading) "Ernest Brown Collection 9-55 Gen. Fund". Small format, 5"W X 7-1/2"H. 284 pp. Book is crisp and clean with slight bumping on corners and spine ends. Some fading on very edges and on spine. Also slight crease on base of spine. Dust jacket has price intace. Substantial chipping on bottom edge of front panel and on corners and spine edges. Front panel has 3-1/2" scratch; spine has small hole; and rear panel has irregular hole torn, appxmtly 1-1/2"X 1/2". Rubbing shows on flap fold and on rear panel. Still, intact and now in protective cover. Laid in memor provedes historical provenance.
