A. C. Green has left us, but his love of Texas, its various parts, its history and literature lives through his bright and lively work. Greene, in his literate and plainspoken way, gave us the great gift of a guide to Texas literature in 1982, "The 50 Best Books on Texas" and in the 1998 revised version, The 50+ Best Books on Texas". Poems of 1st Lt. Henry G. Lee, who survived the Bataan Death March, imprisonment at Cabanatuan and other Japanese POW camps but was killed while being shipped to Formosa aboard a 'hellship'. He buried his poetry under his barracks at Cabanatuan, and it was found after the camp was liberated by American rangers & scouts and Filippino guerillas, Jan. 1945. Lt. Lee's parent's published the poems and letters in 1948. Alice Springs, in her book, 'The Most Dangerous Man in America' said of Lee's work, "...few soldiers leave poems of such quality, but Lee's are celebrated for their restrained and remarkable beauty.". Gray-blue boards with black print showing a little rubbing. Light corner bumping and edge wear. Spine is creased and rubbed, and rear board has 1/4" oval paint spot. Some darkening of edges. Front paste down paper has previous owner's book plate.Opens to signature in a few places, but is a sturdy and clean copy. Rare hard back first printing.
