A. C. Green has left us, but his love of Texas, its various parts, its history and literature lives through his bright and lively work. Greene, in his literate and plainspoken way, gave us the great gift of a guide to Texas literature in 1982, "The 50 Best Books on Texas" and in the 1998 revised version, The 50+ Best Books on Texas". We at Texas Star Books try to keep copies from Greene's list on hand. Some are easier to find than others, so we may not have them all. To view his picks, click on the book title. University of Texas yearbook, The Cactus 1940, "Texas Literature Number" with theme of Texas literature and commentary throughout by J. Frank Dobie - not cited in Dobie bibliography. Art by Bruno Lore - "Memoirs of Col. Ellis P. Bean", Travis's Letter from the Alamo, "The Adventures of Big-Foot Wallace", The Old Chisholm Trail", "The Log of A Cowboy" , "The Texas Rangers" and from Dobie's own, "Coronado's Children". Oversize format, 9-1/2"W X 12-1/4H" - 528 pp. Blue leatherette padded boards show light edgewear. Page edges have some soiling and tanning. Clean and bright interior with very slight loosening of hinge. Very nice copy of scarce Dobie work.

Brown cloth boards have a little light spotting and minor corner and spine end wear. Dust jacket is separated at rear hinge, though rear flap is present. Substantial chipping loss with creasing and tearing. Price intact. Now in protective cover.

Dust jacket has price intact. Teal blue spine and front panel with picture of Eveline Alexander. Top edge has some chipping and fraying with a few closed tears and one small chip missing. Hinges and flap folds show light rubbing, and corners and bottom of spine show light wear. Now in protective cover.

Top front corner is missing 1/3".

Laid in is a copy of Page 5 from a list of titles of books on Texas historical sites, cities or counties with this title marked. Light brown boards have graphic of a spur, emblematic of the storied Spur Ranch, part of which was in Dickens County - also the town of Spur. Oversize format, 8-1/2" W X 11"H. 355 pp. Tight and clean copy has slight right lean. Light edgewear with slight rubbing on hinges and bottom edge. Bottom of spine has very minor fraying.

"Early Day El Pasoan, Amateur Artist, Champion Golfer, Avid Wildcatter and Gold Seeker" are the descriptions of Adah Hadlock on the front dust jacket of this scarce copy, signed on the half title page by her and by the great Texas book designer, Carl Hertzog, who designed this lovely book. Pale purple linen boards with a prickly pear graphic on the front and white impressed title on spine. Published by Texas Western Press, which was founded by Hertzog. Crisp and clean copy with very light edgewear and clean interior. Dust jacket is crisp with very slight rubbing which shows on back. There is a painting by Adah Hadlock on the bottom half of the front jacket in gray-green tones, and the rest of the design has peach and flesh tones with green print. Very attractive. Has light chipping on spine ends and a 1/3in. chip missing on right front corner. Highly collectible and nice copy.

Spine is the least bit sunned, and spine ends have light bumping. Forward top corners have very slight crease. Lovely collectible by Texas literary icons.

Front paste down paper has previous owner's book plate as well as name, date, May 27, 1943, Fort Worth, Texas, in ink on top. Front free end paper has brown ink mark which hardly shows on sepia toned graphic. Interior is clean with a few creases on corners. 185 pp. Covered with clear acrylic which shows a little scraatching.
