A.C. Greene's 50+ Best Books on Texas

A. C. Green has left us, but his love of Texas, its various parts, its history and literature lives through his bright and lively work. Greene, in his literate and plainspoken way, gave us the great gift of a guide to Texas literature in 1982, "The 50 Best Books on Texas" and in the 1998 revised version, The 50+ Best Books on Texas". We at Texas Star Books try to keep copies from Greene's list on hand. Some are easier to find than others, so we may not have them all. To view his picks, click on the book title. Texas Springman-King Co. 1968 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall Signed by Author
Signed by Maude Gilliland, author, on front free end paper. She tells the first-hand story of law enforcement in South Texas during prohibition, her husband, father and grandfather all Texas Rangers. Well indexed and resourced with bibliography. 175 pp. Blue boards with silver print. Spine has some wrinkling from manufacture, and corners are slightly bumped. Bottom edge of first few pages has a few spots. Else clean interior. Dust jacket, now in protective cover, has light creasing on top edge at spine. Front panel with photo of Rangers is bright, as is spine. Solid light rear panel shows a lfew darker spots, very small. Both flap fold show darkening at folds and on top edge. Nice copy of scarce history of border liquor smuggling and the efforts of Texas lawmen to stop it.

Old price on top corner of front free end paper is barely visible. Faint small spots on page edges - bright and clean interior. Dust jacket shows some rubbing, especially on flap fold. Spine end fraying and corner wear. Rear panel has closed tear at bottom corner. Now in protective cover.

First Edition, Third Printing, September, 1967. Crisp, bright and tight copy with black cloth boards and natural linen spine. Half title page has a few small brown spots, perhaps foxing. Else clean interior and exterior. Dust jacket is clean and bright with price intact. Top edge of spine and rear panel has light creasing/small tears. Now in protective cover.

Clean, crisp and bright copy. Reverse of page with Green's inscription has a Christmas greeting, "from Pat and Murray".Dust jacket is price-clipped. It is bright and clean with edge wear. Top edge has a little creasing with light chipping and a half-inch closed tear at front spine. Bottom of rear flap fold has 2 inch tear that has been tape repaired. Now in protective cover.
