A.C. Greene's 50+ Best Books on Texas

A. C. Green has left us, but his love of Texas, its various parts, its history and literature lives through his bright and lively work. Greene, in his literate and plainspoken way, gave us the great gift of a guide to Texas literature in 1982, "The 50 Best Books on Texas" and in the 1998 revised version, The 50+ Best Books on Texas". We at Texas Star Books try to keep copies from Greene's list on hand. Some are easier to find than others, so we may not have them all. To view his picks, click on the book title. October, 1971 issue. Articles: "The New Deal Indian Commissioner", Lawrence C. Kelly; "The Maxwell Cattle Company", Morris F. Taylor; "The Socorro Earthquakes", Bruce Ashcroft. + Book Reviews pp. 266 - 358. Tight soft cover issue with a little creasing on wrappers and a page or two is creased. Lower corner of front page edge has very faint damp stain which does not affect interior. Spine is sun-faded.

January, 1934 issue. Articles: ""Government Expeditions in the Territory of New Mexico, 1846-1859". A. B. Bender; "Bourke on the Southwest, II", Lansing B. Bloom; "Marking the Santa Fe Trail", Frederic A. Culmer. + Book Reviews. 112 pp. Wrappers have light spotting and there is an area of fading or discoloration on the front wrap. Creasing on front along hinge, and slight tear has begun at bottom about 1". Top of spine is curled and exposes signatures, but is intact. There is some chipping at the base of the spine and along edges. Top front corner is missing about 1/2", and rear top edge is missing a piece 1/2" X 2" from corner. Feature article's title is written in red ink on top of front, and there is occasional highlighting/underlining. Damp stain affects first few pages, and dark stain on top page edges affects tiny area of pages. Text is not affected by either.

Back cover shows rubbing and slight soiling to white background.

Group of 2 books on Powell and the Grand Canyon. First, "The Colorado River Region and John Wesley Powell","A collection of papers honoring Powell on the 100th anniversary of his exploration of the Colorado River, 1869 - 1969", with four different articles. Oversize format, 9 1/4"W X 11 3/4"H. 145 pp. Boards have graphic of Grand Canyon in brown monochrome. Very slight right lean. Corners and spine ends have bumping. Top corner of front free end paper has previous owner's name stamped in blue ink, and a penciled number on top near gutter. End papers have a little discoloration. Clean text block. Second book is stapled trade paperback, "John Wesley Powell and the Anthropology of the Canyon Country", 30 pp. 9"W X 11 1/2"H. Front wrap has same graphic of the canyon with previous owner's name stamped on upper right corner, which is slightly bumped, and upper right corner of pages have slight creasing. Other corners and spine ends have very light wear, with front forward edge of wrap having a tiny tear and 1" crease. Nice grouping of Grand Canyon/Powell survey and professional papers.
