Greene, in his literate and plainspoken way, gave us the great gift of a guide to Texas literature in 1982, "The 50 Best Books on Texas" and in the 1998 revised version, The 50+ Best Books on Texas". Authentic program from the 1956 Fort Worth Southwestern Exposition and Fat Stock Show. With memorial piece on Amon Carter, Jr., who died June 23, 1955. Carter is pictured on the front cover in the clouds above Amon Carter Square in Fort Worth, astride his horse and alongside his old friend Will Rogers, also horseback. Price 50c on cover. Laid in is 'Today's Program' for Matinee, Sat., Jan. 28th, 1956, and listed among the contestants are 5 time world champion Jim Shoulders and 2 time world champion Casey Tibbs. 56 pp. 8-1/2"WX 10-3/4"H. Stapled binding with light wear on hinge, especially on ends. Corners have light wear, and lightweight wrappers have a little creasing. Sturdy, bright and clean copy.

Inscription on front free end paper to "Mrs. Edna Perry Deckles and the Texas State Genealogical Society", which Mrs. Deckles founded. The inscription seems obviously from the author but is without signature. Also, laid in is a postcard with photo of first settlement of Hopkins Co. and handwritten notation, presumably by author. Reverse has information about the book and ordering it from author, Gladys St. Clair. 99 pp. Tan cloth boards with bright gilt print on spine. Bottom edge has some staining, perhaps foxing, since page edges have foxing, and there is light foxing on end papers. A little foxing on occasional pages, too. Front end papers have ghosting where news clippings must have lain. Very light edge wear. Dust jacket has a little spotting with slight rubbing, especially on flap folds and rear panel near rear hinge. Front panel has very faint scuff. Rear flap fold has creasing. Now in protective cover.

Book has been professionally repaired with bright gilt type and graphics on front board and on spine. Light spotting and rubbing. Corners are bumped with cloth worn and a little frayed. Tight with slight right lean. End papers are worn on edges and there are a few instances of penciled notes. Interior has a few smudges throughout with an instance or to of tearing. Very nicely stored collectible copy.
